Our visit to Medway Maritime Hospital started off with a routine 12 week ultrasound scan, which showed our baby had not formed properly (body stock anomaly) which meant the heart was not in the correct place and organs had formed outside of the body.
After the scan, we were taken to a private room to deal with what we had just been told. A lovely consultant came to see us to confirm the details, but the unfortunate news was that our pregnancy was not going to last as this is a lethal anomaly which would mean the baby would not survive.
We decided to not continue with the pregnancy which meant that I had to take a tablet and be admitted after 48 hours to continue with the procedure. All the staff, including the consultant we saw initially and the senior consultant the following day were so kind, and sympathetic towards me and my husband. The midwives I also saw were so kind to me and very sympathetic. The consultants explained very well what had happened and assured us the chances of this happening in a future pregnancy were highly unlikely.
When I was admitted on the Saturday, I had a midwife with me the whole time, who was checking me the whole time and was also incredibly kind. As this was my first visit to any hospital, I was glad that it was not too traumatic despite the difficult circumstances. When we try again for another baby, I hope to see the lovely staff in happier times!
"Very well looked after by lovely staff"
