"Unacceptable treatment at Warwick A & E Hospital"

About: Warwick Hospital

I started getting sore throat, cough and running nose for last few days and by the end of yesterday I felt much worse consequently I lost my voice.

I checked the various sites last night and followed some self treatment instructions and took some medicines last night but on Saturday morning (today) I felt run down and very bad hardly slept last night.

Since my medical Centre is closed today I tried Warwick Hospital A&E Department just after 8am.

After registering at the reception I was seen by nurse.

I managed to explain my situation to the nurse with a very low volume voice and sign language as I was asked to do so.

Then I was asked that if I tried 111 NHS for advise and I answered that I preferred not to make a call since could hardly be heard.

But the nurse abruptly reminded me that I should contact 111 since I could explain myself to the nurse therefore should be the same on the phone.

The nurse took my blood pressure and temperature and wanted me to take a sit again and further more asked me while I am waiting to be treated I should let them know if I feel any better.

There was only one patient in the waiting room when I took my position in the sit. Two hours later I really felt rundown and asked the receptionist to cancel the appointment but after I was told that I was next in the queue I went back to my sit again.

After another half an hour waiting while lots of patients were treated left the hospital

I had to cancel the appointment and return home since I couldn't see a point staying there any more.

This wasn't my first disappointment from the Warwick

A&E service.

I was taken to A&E a few years ago (all should be in my medical history) after having a cut on cornet of my left eye which needed stitches. The nurses who took me to the hospital said that they would prefer the treatment to be carried out in hospital since the cut was on a sensitive area of my face.

Well after usual waiting period the nurse who treated me made such a mess on my face that I would do a much better job if I did it myself. There was a superglue all over my face and also into my left eye which started burning my eye and the cut was still open covered with superglue.

My colleague from work who accompanied me to the hospital that day confirmed the mess. Also when I visited my medical centre the next day for further treatments my GP was shocked and furious to see the state of my face and the result of the treatment.

There could be arguments about emergency treatments and so on but in my experience Warwick

A&E service is unacceptable.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience in our Accident and Emergency Department. However as the Nurse explained to you A&E should only be used in the event of an accident or emergency and in other circumstances we promote NHS 111 or the GP out of hours service as alternatives, so that A&E services are available to those who need them. If you would like to speak to someone about this please contact our patient experience team on 01926 600 054.

Yours sincerely,

Helen Lancaster, Director of Nursing
