I was an informal patient at the newberry centre for 3 months. overall most of the staff were fairley supportive but I feel like they became overly stressed if a patient was distressed and all of the staff would focus on that one patient and ignore others sometimes. when I was admitted, the building was new and the rooms were very nice and you were able to decorate it with your own things. there is a wall for pictures and drawings that I had done. some of the staff have preffered patients which I find is unfair. if a patient has self harmed and is scared of getting their bloods taken they may say things such as "so, you can self harm but youre scared of a tiny needle?" which I found inappropriate. I was there to get help and there were a few incidents in which I harmed myself and they threatened discharge without being bothered on why I was distressed. sometimes when staff are nice they might spent time with you while you are distressed and they will try to distract you which I found very helpful. when your risks are high, they will still force leave on you unless you don't have anywhere to go or are on a strict section, and due to this, I saw many people come back from leave in an ambulance or police van early and they would go on leave the next weekend. overall I do think that I learned many distractions at the newberry centre and I am at lower risk that I was at when I first got admitted.
