"Hospitalization"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine

(as the patient),

When I arrived to A&E I had severe abdominal pain. The doctor assessed me and I felt they were quite rude about asking me personal questions. I didn't want to take Morphine for the pain as I like to have my brain at 100% and clean. Me being still in pain (which didn't pass after IV Paracetamol), this same doctor told me that I'll be discharged in the same day, later on. I asked why and how come? ? They answered because I'm not complaining of any pain. (I literally couldn't move because of the pain). I was thinking of telling them, just because when I gave birth to my daughter, and I didn’t shout, does that mean that I wasn't in pain? But instead, I just told them that the pain is still present and of a high level.

One of the nurses was also rude to me, I think they actually hid behind me while preparing the IV Paracetamol, just because I was watching (I thought I have the right to see and know what will happen to me. ) And when they took a urine sample from me, in the agony, I didn't say thanks, but they answered "You're welcome" to the never said thank you. I find this very rude and I must say I am very unhappy of how I was treated. I was expecting more from an NHS hospital where there are trained staff who usually are nice (or at least this is what I thought until I arrived in there as a patient. )

Dear Manka77

Thank you for taking time to post your feedback. NHS Grampian is an organisation open to learning and improvement from all sources of feedback and so we welcome your post and will ensure that staff in the ED department are made aware that they left a person feeling that they had not received the best possible care and that the manner of some of their staff was found wanting.

It goes, without saying, that you have every right to be informed and involved in decisions about your care and you should always be made aware of what is happening throughout any journey of care.

I very much hope that your pain has settled and that you have no recurrence. If this were to happen you should seek help in the usual way initially from your GP.

If you would like to get in touch to share your experiences in more depth I would be happy to receive a call or email from you. I can be contacted by telephone on 01224 567900 or by email at loldroyd@nhs.net

Please accept my apology on behalf of NHS Grampian.

Kind regards,
