"My wife was told she had to leave straight away"

I was booked in for a trabeculectomy recently but had not had much information given to me regarding long term outlook and risks involved. When I arrived with my wife we were separated right away, me to the operating lounge and my wife left in the corridor on the third floor, I wanted my wife with me as it was my first operation but was told that was not possible, I asked if my wife could be present when the surgeon went through everything with me, that was allowed but when the surgeon had finished talking we wanted to discuss the information we were given and make a decision together, I was not sure if I wanted to go ahead with the operation. A nurse came over and told my wife she had to leave right away, when we tried to explain what we were talking about she said my wife still had to go it was not possible for her to remain any longer. As I was stressed enough about what to do, my wife left without a fuss and went back to the corridor on the third floor, we then text each other for the next hour trying to decide whether to have the operation or not.

The consequences of my eyesight in the future affect my wife and family as much as it affects myself. I know that it is hospital practice for all day case patients to be taken to the operating lounge where there is limited space but surely there can be some arrangement by where such important decisions can be talked over without having to text each other. I do hope that in the future other people will not have to go through what we did.
