My husband broke his elbow last Thursday whilst on Burgh Island. The paramedic contacted Kingsbridge MIU to arrange an x ray. We agreed I could drive him there arriving between 4.30 to 4.45pm. Kingsbridge refused point blank to see us as 'we might be late and they closed at 5'.
Because of this lack of consideration, we all agreed we would love a job where you could walk out of the door on the dot of 5pm, we had to travel 15 miles to Derriford during the rush hour arriving at 6.15pm.
We finally left Derrifiord at 10.45pm arriving back in Salcombe close to midnight.
I could be very bitter and wish your staff receive the same service when a family member needs medical attention but what I do want to highlight is the fact neither the local first aides nor the paramedic were surprised by your attitude , both shrugged and said they refuse casualties all the time.
You clearly need to focus on how other professionals view your service when undertaking a QA review.
The unnecessary stress you caused us, my husband is a very fit and healthy 61, would be far worse if inflicted on a young child or someone with other presenting health issues. Indeed our daughter who worked with children in the area several years ago also commented 'nothing's changed then!' Having had similar experiences when taking children with minor injuries to your unit.
Really is time for a rethink Kingsbridge.
