"Misdiagnosis!"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a relative),

I had my dad at the doctors several times with a sore throat each time he went the doctor said tonsillitis and gave him antibiotics! Only once did he look at my dad's throat. No painkillers or anything prescribed. On the 4th or 5th visit my dad was finally sent to the hospital and was told he was terminal with cancer! My dad died 8 weeks later! The doctor should have saw this. The consultant said the growth of cancer was so big they couldn't cut it away.  The growth started at the back of my dad's throat so why didn't his GP see this? ?

I have started a complaints procedure or at least I think it has started because I have had some carry on trying to start the process getting past from pillar to post. I am devastated my dad was a victim of malpractice and lost his life.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Angry Daughter 1985

It is so upsetting to read your story, and I cannot imagine what you and the rest of your family will be going through right now. To lose your Dad so unexpectedly, and so suddenly, will be absolutely heartbreaking for you, and my most sincere thoughts are with you at this time.

You have done the right thing by starting the complaints procedure to allow you the opportunity to get answers to some of the questions you have about the treatment your Dad received from his GP. GP’s are responsible for managing their own complaints, and this is usually done through the Practice Manager. I know you said you have had some difficulty getting this procedure started, and are still unsure how this is progressing – I would be happy to try and help to unpick this a bit for you if I can, if you could get in touch to let me know which Practice it was your Dad was seen at. My direct email is lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk and I would be more than happy to look at how I can help. If you feel you would like to see the complaints process through instead, or have since had communication with them directly about your complaint, then that is absolutely fine, but please be assured that regardless I will highlight your story to our Primary Care Leads to reflect on.

While I know that going through this complaints process will never mend the pain and loss you feel at losing your Dad, I hope that it does eventually provide some comfort in providing some sort of resolution to the questions you have.

With very best wishes,

Lorna
