About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

Maternity Ward 6 - Overnight stay

This review is for Maternity Ward 6 Kensington building Leicester Royal Infirmary. This is review of the night staff.

There is a sharp contrast of day vs night. Day staff were lovely.

Night Care

Night staff were not personable and made me dred thinking of an additional night. Therefore with all fingers crossed and a big push to be discharged. I would have got ill staying in hospital.

With a third degree tear and a painful cannula I struggled through the night with a new born. Only asked for help a few times of which I was met with a sigh and made to feel like a burden. Shouldn't matter whether I didn't have a c section I am still a patient and trauma after birth.

Facilities

The facilities were cramped, the lights and doors were kept on, the toilets were not always clean. Sanitary bags were never present in any toilet.

Discharge

The doctor who needed to confirm my discharge did not fill me with any confidence. The doctor was half foot out the door didn't seem to have known my case, didn't really know discharge rules e.g. Asking the midwife if I needed to open my bowels before being discharged...should the doctor not know? Did not check my stitches. I had to get the doctor back to ask questions as the doctor didn't want to stay, yet spent most the time in the corridor talking about weekend plans.

Took from breakfast to 8pm to get discharged. And it was a case of who shouted loudest to get anything done. I had to wait after handover to night staff to be discharged and was not updated of progress at all.

When leaving there was no emotion from the staff. Nothing like when my first child was born at a different hospital.

Food was fine.

I was asked to answer some questions in the hospital of the service ... Word of advise do not ask the questions directly. Let the patient complete and stay anonymous. You will not get an accurate reflection of being put on the spot.
