"Struggling to get my son referred"

About: Royal South Hants Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has had a cough for a long time, it came and went, but then became constant, and then noticed an enlarged tonsil on one side. 

Visited my GP the very next day, as I was going anyway (regarding the cough). The Doctor I saw, verified straight away that the tonsil was very enlarged, and prescribed a 10 day course on antibiotics. I knew this wouldn't help as, he wasn't complaining of any pain, but I could understand ruling an infection out so was happy to have my findings realised.

So, after two weeks, no change at all, so was told I'd have an urgent referral, and to be ready to go in at any time, but to phone back in five days if I hadn't heard. Hey, five days passed, phone again, get referred again (urgent), and then get told, phone again if you don't hear in a few days. Well, what do you know, don't hear a dickey bird, so I get told to phone the hospital direct. I do this, only to be told that they have no record of any referral at all? ? ? They tell me to call my surgery back and ask if they will fax back the URGENT referral!

I then do this, and then told to call back the hospital to see if they've received the fax. I do this, and then I'm told that I'll have a five day wait while the consultant gets a chance to 'deem' me an appointment! I'm absolutely livid, my little boy is three years old and is not well. Luckily for me, I've not had to spend any time in hospital, but I think the way my son has been treated so far leaves a lot to be desired!

I am sorry to hear of the problems you have had in getting an appointment for your son. I can appreciate your concern in having to wait for your son to be seen. I hope that you have now had a response and you son has been treated.
