"Inpatient Stay"

About: Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

My Mum was recently admitted via A and E with a pneumothorax to Ward 43 at KMH. The nursing staff were friendly and attentive however the medical attention and treatment received was appalling. She spent 5 days there and in that time received 2 X-Ray's and 1 CT scan. It would take all day for an X-ray and then a further morning for any results. Information given by the medical team was inconsistent and on one occasion unreliable, and we have since been made aware by Staff at City Hospital that problems identified by KMH staff with the diaphragm were not communicated at all. Unfortunately my mums condition deteriorated to the point of needing emergency transfer to City hospital. The transfer was handled very badly, my mum waited 14 hours for 'emergency' transfer, leaving KMH at 12.15am. This is completely unsatisfactory and if it hadn't been for my mum keep asking what was happening and the Consultant at City chasing where my mum was, the outcome could have been very different. My concerns are not only about the inefficiency and risks involved in such patient management but also for those patients who are unable to communicate or lack the confidence to chase their own medical treatment, what happens to them?

Based on this experience, I have no confidence in the doctors at Kings Mill to act quickly and efficiently to maximise patient outcomes
