"Gallbladder operation cancellation 2 times"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / General surgery

(as a carer),

My wife was referred to a gastroenterologist in March 2015. He then referred her to a surgeon to check the gallbladder and decide if it needs removing. He then had ct scans done and decided she had a porcelain gallbladder and it needed to be removed as soon as possible. She then saw a couple more consultants and the last one told her that the porcelain gallbladder could be cancerous and that it will be removed in 2/3 weeks that was in the middle of 2015. She then got an appointment in October 2015 for a pre-op and was then later given an appointment to have the gallbladder removed in January 2016.

She then received a phone call from the consultants secretary cancelling the operation due to no theatre staff on operation day. They made another appointment for the operation and had to go for another pre- op appointment. Then, she received a phone call saying the operation has yet again been cancelled due partly to the junior doctors strikes, but I phoned the elective treatment centre on the 22nd March to confirm that she will be attending for the operation on the 24th and they assured me that the op will go ahead defiantly this time and then we get that phone call on the 23rd. Surely this is not right to make somebody suffer with all this pain and worry (about the cancer statement) and then keep pulling the rug from under her? So if this hospital can keep cancelling surely she should be entitled to have this operation done privately and quickly at the expense of the NHS seeing that the consultant planted the seed about cancer and the added worry of that and the pain?

We are very sorry to receive your comments and concerns via the NHS Choices website about your experiences with regards to your wife’s gallbladder surgery. We understand how distressing a situation it is when surgery is cancelled with short notice; however, this is not something which is done lightly by the hospital. Unfortunately, there are some instances where this is unavoidable. We would like to discuss this with you to try and provide assurance and to confirm the date for your wife’s future procedure.

We take all issues surrounding patient care very seriously and would very much like to hear from you directly about this, especially as you have said your wife is struggling with pain. If you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk they will be happy to discuss this with you and they will ensure that you are put in contact with a member of the team in the surgical department who can respond to your concerns.
