"She listens attentively every time."

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / Elderly Community Mental Health Service

(as the patient),

Shirley (my C.P.N) has been visiting me for almost 2 years. I always knew she would arrive on time if possible and never worried that she would not visit. This was very important as I have negative feelings about myself. She Is always helpful and considerate of my ever changing moods of depression, listening while I’m ranting then helping me make sense of negative thoughts of self-harm e. g. overdosing, never dismissing these thoughts so I have no fear of expressing how I’m feeling to her because I know she won’t deride me.

I was sexually abused at a young age and was only made to remember when I was much older with children. I always felt dirty and inferior. When my baby daughter died, cot death, I believed that bad things happened to dirty people, even yet that thought comes back and I feel I might contaminate people. I also fear people will see the person I hate and that I’m always being watched when these feeling are strong. Shirley listens attentively every time.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Rocket5701,

Thank you so much for sharing your appreciation of Shirley and her care. As luck would have it, I think there is only one Shirley (CPN) so it will be easy to make sure it gets straight to her.

You have had such difficult things to overcome and it is a testament to you that you have been strong and shared this with us so publically, thank you. It is a reminder to us all that we never know what people are coping with and we should be kind to everyone at all times.

Clearly Shirley has been a great support to you and I am sure it will please her that you feel this way. it will be a pleasure to pass this on to her.

Best wishes to you,

Eunice
