"My stay whilst receiving tonsil removal"

About: Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as the patient),

Having suffered for years with chronic bouts of tonsillitis, I was more than ready for them to be removed, as they were just a few week ago. The wait in the day surgery unit from 11am until 3: 30 with nothing but the smallest sip of water was far from ideal, but otherwise the staff up to this point were so lovely. There seemed to be a bit of a lack of communication however regarding whether or not I was staying overnight, i was told by both the anaesthetist and a nurse I wouldn't be staying as previously planned and would in fact be going home after 6 hours of observation, this was however not the case when I got to the unit, where i was told I wouldn't be going anywhere.

Living away from the hospital and being unable to drive post op made me worry about finding a way home. The operation went well and all theatre staff and my recovery nurse were lovely, on the ward I requested some pain relief but didn't get any until I was visited by a member of staff to answer some questions, the member of staff was incredibly helpful and I found the member of staff to be very approachable. This member of staff seemed to get things done!

Overnight I had some issues with a racing heart which required ECG, all nurses overnight were attentive and helpful, giving pain relief when required and putting me at ease.

In the morning however I found my nurse incredibly standoffish and rude, I was told I was not going to be given the strong painkiller I was written up for as I'd only had a tonsillectomy, something which if you've ever had one, makes your blood boil, it is agony!

I was told if I had my painkiller then I wouldn't be discharged, something I know they needed due to lack of beds! My room was also right near the nurses station meaning i could very clearly hear nurses talking about other patients, as well as myself!

All in all I was mostly happy with my experience with the exception of a very rude member of staff who possibly was one of the least sympathetic people I've met!
