Last year my father-in-law spent the last week of his life in this hospital, and although I did not visit him there myself, I heard only excellent reviews.
This year, sadly my mother-in-law was admitted as a part of her end-of-life plan.
She chose this hospital because she had every confidence in the care she would receive, and her confidence was not misplaced.
She felt safe and well cared for in every way, and as a regular visitor, I can also say that the nurses and other staff were not only caring for her as a patient, but also of us as visitors and family.
It cannot be underestimated how important a smile and a little kindness is, and at Haltwhistle Memorial, they are abundant.
I remember thinking that if I were as rich as Bill Gates, all the money in the world could not buy better care than these kind staff give.
I thank them for making my mother-in-law's last weeks as comfortable and as care free as possible under the circumstances, and for all the support they gave to us, her family and her friends.
I hope they know how very much appreciated it has been.
"A shining example of the NHS at its very best"
