My father suffered a stroke on a Sunday morning in January 2016. Whilst I was dealing 999 the thoughts going through my head where about the governments claim there were no services available during weekends at hospitals.
From the moment I was put through to the ambulance service call handler I was reassured, it took under 4 minutes for the ambulance to arrive and it was confirmed my dad had a stroke. The ambulance crew were very calming and reassuring to me and mum and dad was transported to the hospital in less than 10 minutes.
As the ambulance doors opened at the NNUH a nurse could be seen waiting at the entrance; this turned out to be a stroke nurse who wished my father off for a scan to confirm the stroke. In the meantime the consultant stroke doctor took me into a room to explain the situation and take me through the process for my father.
By 10. 30 am my dad had started treatment for his stroke, and was admitted to the stroke unit at the NNUH. My dad was discharged from hospital to the community stroke team and received his rehabilitation from speak, physio and community stroke nurse I cannot thank all the staff, from the 999 call handler, paramedics to the NNUH stroke teams and not forgetting the amazing work of the community stroke team based at the Bowthorpe hospital enough for their compassion and care of my father and allowing him to get back to health.
