"Shuttle bus"

About: Southmead Hospital

My 94 year old grandmother is a patient in Elgar house. I wanted to take her out to break up her day. We sourced a wheelchair that was questionable in its off ward capabilities but headed for the shuttle bus with determination. The driver of the bus was a credit to the hospital. The driver helped us on the bus and advised if we took the trip again to wait outside of Elgar house and they would pick us up from there. True to their word on our return journey the driver dropped us off outside the ward saving my gran a very bumpy ride.

Had it not have been for another relative I would not have known about the shuttle bus and it's capability to take wheel chairs. To improve other patient and relative experiences it would be useful to have an information pack available so that families can maximise the quality of their visit and provide a change of scenery for their relatives if well enough to do so.

A big thank you again to the driver that was on shift the morning of the 12th March.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for posting your comments about the shuttle bus and in particular the service offered by the driver. In the late spring early summer after the completion of the new patient’s multi-story car park many more parking spaces will be available, including an increase in disabled parking bays, all with much better and direct access to the main hospital Brunel Building. The shuttle bus service, which has been a fixture of the hospital since June 2013, will then cease. But in the interim its availability will continue to feature in the information on the North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) website. I am sorry if you were not aware of this. I have passed on your kind comments to the company who operate the service for NBT.

Kind Regards – Steve Sykes
