"More than Words programme"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Adult Speech and Language Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My husband and I recently completed the More than words programme which we attended with the aim of helping our five year son who is on the autistic spectrum. The course is time consuming and a lot to commit to when juggling family life, work and any other pressures you may have. However from night one, it was clear that the course was going to be beneficial to my husband and I, and fun. Each session covered areas that helped us, and allowed us to look at what we could be doing differently, rather than the familiar feeling that we're banging our heads against a brick wall. The group chat was equally important to let us know we're not alone, and other people are facing the same challenges. Just having the opportunity to share ideas and solutions has helped us, which has ultimately helped our son. The progress we have seen in him over the last few months has been wonderful. There is still a long road ahead but attending more than words has allowed us a fresh insight into some of the challenges our child faces, and that there is hope and help available. Anne was wonderful and insightful and so supportive. We have put into practice a number of suggestions that Anne made, which we are already seeing an increase in vocabulary and behaviour. This should be made available to all families who may be affected by the autism spectrum.

Speech and language therapy provides treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

Dear Bunnyrun

Thank you for your positive feedback on the More Than Words Programme which I will certainly pass on to the speech and language therapist-Anne.

I think you are right in saying that it is a big commitment for parents but at the same time the benefits are hopefully worth the investment in time and energy.

I am very pleased that you have been able to try new approaches with your son and that he has made progress.

We are doing our best to have a "menu of interventions" available to families and people who have autism and to work together with parents, people who have autism and also our colleagues in Education, Health and Voluntary Agencies, as everyone has a part to play.

I hope you continue to make progress.

Kindest Regards

Pauline
