"Treated like a statistic"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

I gave birth at St. Peter's in August 2014 and I am looking online at the reviews as I am pregnant again and need to make a decision regarding the location of my birth.

I can see that the reviews are either exceptional or awful which leads me to believe things have not improved to a consistent level.

I expressed an desire to breastfed my daughter however I struggled with technique and as I had a private room, I was left to get on with it.

After advising senior staff of this, I was sent a person in a green uniform who told me that they were aware of my complaint and they couldn't believe that I was unable to get the technique as it was simple.

They proceeded to push ,y child towards my breast to latch on whilst saying "there you go, easy".

They then told me that as they were about to get their next accreditation for breastfeeding, no one was leaving the hospital without giving it a good go.

I felt I was treated like a statistic not a person.

We are very sorry to hear that your experience on our postnatal ward in 2014 was not better and that you did not feel well supported in breastfeeding your daughter. We have done a lot of work, particularly since your stay with us, in improving the support we offer with breastfeeding and we do try to encourage all new Mums to try it. However this is a personal choice and we would never want any woman under our care to feel like a statistic. We are sorry you were made to feel that way.

We really hope that you will consider birthing with us again and would like to reassure you that the overwhelming amount of feedback we receive is positive. We’ve made some great improvements to our maternity services in the past two years, including the opening of our brand new Birth Centre. We would welcome the opportunity to show you around this and our other facilities, plus address any concerns you have. Please do get in touch with Deborah Parkinson, Lead Midwife, directly on 01932 722392.
