"Post natal care"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Had a tear during childbirth that was missed and 9 weeks on still hasn't healed. Saw 3 different midwives, a nurse and 4 different gps who kept fobbing me off trying to convince me it was healing. Had to demand to be referred to gynaecologist. Still waiting on an appointment.

I think post natal care needs improvement and the correct people reviewing healing progress. Midwives need better training for stitching given the statistics on how many women have to be restitched.

I am very sorry to read about your experience of postnatal care and your continuing difficulties. All midwifery staff have training in assessing tears following childbirth and most midwives can suture. As a service we will try and obtain statistics on how many women need to be restitched as I do believe this would be a useful indicator of this feature of the service. I would like to thank you for posting your comments and bringing your circumstances to our attention. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss your care in more detail. I can be contacted via the Complaints and Feedback Team either by telephoning 0800 027 5507 (freephone) or via email to feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Kind regards.

Justine Craig

Head of Midwifery
