"Fantastic care during my husband's recent stay in hospital"

About: Balfour Hospital / Medical Oncology

(as a relative),

My husband was rushed to hospital with a severe infection - he has terminal cancer and has been undergoing intensive chemotherapy so already extremely unwell.

The whole experience could not have been any better considering the circumstances. The emergency doctor came out to see my husband and she was very kind and understanding and stayed with him unitl he was safely in the ambulance, all the time explaining to him and myself what was happening.

He was taken to A&E and seen by a very nice doctor and then a very kind consultant. After some tests he was admitted to the MacMillan ward. All the staff there were amazing, nothing was too much trouble for them and they were very patient and kind.

They told me to phone day or night if I had any concerns or worries about my husband, he wasnt eating too well and they went out of their way to try and tempt him with all different foods, cooking him eggs, custard etc at any time of the day or night that he was able to eat. One day on the menu there was rice and raisins but he does not like raisins in his rice so they even said they would pick out the raisins for him. Again nothing was too much trouble for them they was willing to do all they could to make his stay better and for his health to improve.

When he was down one day as he was missing home they suggested bringing our dog in to see him which really helped him.

Dear Shazzza7

Thank you very much for taking the time to share you and your husband's experience of care during a recent admission and stay in the Balfour Hospital. I am sorry to hear he has been unwell during his chemotherapy treatment.

However, I was very pleased that the care given to your husband has made his experience so much better. The staff will be delighted to know that they have helped in some way and I will ensure that I share your story with them.

It seems from what you say that everyone has tried to make your husband's time in the hospital as comfortable as possible and have taken time to find out what is important to him. I hope this has helped a little with his recovery.

If I can be of any further help at any time, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I can be contacted on 01856 888221 or by email at julietait@nhs.net

Kind regards

Julie
