"Follow up appointments and contact."

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital

Had cataract surgery. Did not receive the required 2 week follow up appointment, just 6 week. Subsequently during this first 2 weeks I found that I needed urgent major surgery for something unrelated, which has a 3 month recovery time.

I tried to ring the appointments line to get an earlier check-up on three occasions. Each time I was passed on to another line and kept in a queue for about 30mins, then cut off.

I rang another number and left details on an answer machine. No reply.

I emailed. Still no reply.

3 weeks post op I went into the eye treatment centre to try to be seen. They were full. The consultant is on holiday next week apparently and so I will have to wait until the following week. I will almost certainly have been admitted for surgery by then!

I really wanted to have a check up to make sure it is healing ok, before being admitted for my major surgery. One less thing to worry about.

They really should not be carrying out cataract surgery if they cannot do the follow up appointments.

When I received my first appointment they had the cheek to send a text saying how much missed appointments cost the NHS. That would be fine if it was possible to contact them, or if you actually received the required appointments in the first place!
