"Turning your bad experience into a good one"

About: Collective Voice: North West Standing Conference Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I had a broken heart and had a nervous breakdown. I couldn't sleep or eat and the anxiety inside was crippling me. I wanted to die- pacing the hour and finding I'm going mad. But my mum nursed me back to health and gradually I got better but still suffered from the odd delusional belief and I've been sectioned for this about 15 times. I could have let this destroy my life but it hasn't and I work very hard nowadays sitting in committees and forums telling the professions how to run their services. And gradually my self respect is returning. I still think there is a long way to go but turning your bad experience into a good one by keeping others less fortunate than yourself is a good place to start.

My name is Mick McKeown and I help to support the Collective Voice network which has been funded by the Mental Health Improvement Programme in the North West.

It is heartening to read messages such as yours which show how people are determined to make a positive difference to mental health care despite having had, and continuing to have, distressing personal experiences. It is also humbling to appreciate that the hard work you put in is aimed simply at improving things for others. This sort of commitment is at the heart of developing Collective Voice. I hope you will stay in touch and contribute to our discussions about how to make the collective voice of service users and carers heard and ultimately improve services and society for the better.
