"Thats not my name!"

About: Peterborough PCT

(as the patient),

I am 18 weeks pregnant and went to the midwife on Tuesday to get the results of my previous blood tests. When I arrived I was told that I should have received a letter in the post referring me to the hospital as I had too much Glucose in my blood (which apparently is normal in pregnany). I was told I would need to go in to hospital for a morning to have some tests done as I was on the verge of Diabetes. The midwife kindly rang the hopsital to arrange the appointment and while doing so asked me to confirm that I still live at an address the other side of town. I told her I have never lived there and she informed me she had the wrong patients details on screen. Quite a relief for me but at the same time not very professional.

Anyway, later on in the appoitment she said that I would need to take Iron tablets as my iron levels are slightly low. I could deal with this as I know it is very common during pregnancy and at the end of the appointment ordered them at the reception desk. As I had never taken them before it needed to be authorised by the Doctor and they would deliver them to my parent's house the next day. Two days later they had not arrived so we called the pharmacy to be told that I do not need iron tablets as the Doctor has said my Iron level reading is very good at present.

Again, this is good news for me but it makes me wonder if they are misdiagnosing people every single day.

Luckily, mine have been minor issues but I feel that but a health professionals' lack of concentratation or knowledge of the computer systems could have resulted in telling somebody else they had something seriously wrong with them when they hadnt or worse, not diagnosing people correctly when they had a serious illness.
