I had an appointment with a doctor 18/02/16 and it was an awful experience. I took my top off and the first thing they said to me was how much do you weigh, I bet it’s only about 40 kilos, to say I was shocked is an understatement and all I can say is it’s a good job I don’t suffer with an eating disorder!! My weight was completely irrelevant for the appointment, they didn’t need to weigh me or to know my weight for any reason. I then had to see them a bit later on and they saw me eating a piece of chocolate and said how can you be so skinny and eat chocolate, this comment would never normally offend me, but due to the earlier comment, I found it baffling!! I have spoken to a lot of other people about these remarks, and everyone agrees, you do not ask someone there weight unless you need to. If I weighed 20 stone, would they have asked me how much do you weigh then, somehow I very much doubt it and I certainly hope not!!
Also I definitely weigh more than 40 kilos, not that it’s any of their business. If they meant these comments as a joke or compliment, it was lost on me.
I know I am incredibly lucky that the only thing wrong with me is a small cyst compared with what some of the other patients they see are going through but I know someone who suffers from Anorexia and these sort of flippant remarks, if they were said to her, would be very hurtful and confusing.
I found this doctor's whole manner to be very abrupt and at times very confusing throughout the whole appointment, it was only my second visit to the clinic.
I first came to the clinic 17/12/2015 and my appointment was with another doctor and it was a totally different experience. This doctor was very thorough and professional, they explained everything really clearly and didn’t comment on my weight!! I would also like to add that everyone else I saw during my two visits were really lovely and helpful.
