"Admission due to a collapsed lung"

About: Derriford Hospital

I was transferred from Torbay hospital to undergo an operation for a collapsed lung.

I arrived with my notes and was put into a side room on my own.

A nice member of staff arrived to take me for a chest X-ray but it got a little confusing due to the fact that Torbay failed to remove my wrist band which obviously had the correct name on it but the hospital details were incorrect.

After a few short minutes I was on my way to X-ray with a new wrist band with all the correct details on it.

The nursing staff was brilliant, always on hand if there was a problem and very polite with an extremely professional manner.

Doctors rounds were always very informative telling you exactly what is required and the course of action needed which put your mind at rest as you can see a plan in action.

The post op team were great and made me feel totally at ease as this was my first time under the knife. They would inform you of every step they carried out and what is was for and being a little nosey I was asking about other things and they told me all about those too!

Post op staff in the recovery was brilliant, very polite and concerned as to how I was feeling. The member of staff with me checked me over whilst carrying out a conversation which was a great way to get my mind focused and ready to return to the ward.

A big thank you to the theatre staff and the surgeon for the procedure they carried out on me with such care and professionalism.

The morning after my operation the nurses wanted to get me into a chair and out of bed and were surprised when I replied "thank god for that as I can't be in here all day"

I was quickly out of bed and settled in my chair and made very comfortable before breakfast.

I can't rate the level of care these people provide day in day out on an ever expanding patient list.

All departments I went into for treatments were extremely polite and professional in their jobs.

The food is also great and the lady’s who serve these are brilliant and ever accommodating.

The tea staff deserve a special mention. After my first night mistake asking for a cup of tea with 3 sugars in it was very sweet to say the least, this was due to Torbay using sachets of sugar and Derriford using a sugar bowl. Mistake relayed and each and every time I received a cuppa it would arrive with a resounding “cup of tea with one sugar".

Best hospital I have ever been in as either a patient or just visiting!

Well done to all the staff and keep up the good work in these difficult times.;
