"Dental pain"

About: Glasgow Dental Hospital and School / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as the patient),

I got a appointment yesterday and was told I would have to wait to be fitted in. Waited 20 mins and got a dentist and a Student. I tried to show the information I had got on line about a Dry Socket but this was rejected by the Dentist and they would not let me show the Student..So not happy in lots of pain, finally got my way that I thought I had a sharp bit of bone in the socket and that was the problem on top of the Dry Socket. Got injections to kill the pain and surgery to cut out the bone plus some Algival and a stitch in the gum. So this morning the socket was O. K. but in future if I say I have had trouble with Dry Sockets in the past then I should get what I wanted at the start, some Algival to kill the great pain instead of losing sleep and suffering pain that no Ibuprofen or Paracetamol can touch.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Ed2G,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us on Patient Opinion - I am glad that everything got sorted out for you and that the treatment and painkillers you were given resolved your pain. I appreciate your point that you felt the Dentist didn't listen to you when you first went in, and I know how frustrating that can be, particularly when you are in pain. I will be sure to pass your feedback on to the service so that this can be reflected on for future.

With best wishes,

Lorna

Update posted by Ed2G (the patient)

I main point I wish to make is why can I not get Algival when I know that I have had a dry socket,s in the past , WHAT is the problem with ALGIVAL is it poison ? If it comes out I can stick it in again unless I swallow it ? Its like Dentists have products that they keep and will not let any body have . An example of this is a product that holds denture plates in but I can not get it anywhere . I have tried other products but they do not work and the product that works best is White like chewing gum that sets and sticks to the plate ,it can be washed and it forms a seal that takes up any slack in the denture and is used by dentists .
