"haemochromatosis"

About: East Riding of Yorkshire PCT

(as a relative),

My husband is supposed to have weekly venesections on the Medical Day Unit. The staff are extremely caring and efficient but the ward is far too busy for the volume of patients coming through the door. Consequently my husband's weekly appointment is often postponed because they are fully booked - they cannot not fit him in for his venesection until the end of this month (January, 2010). This will be six weeks since his last visit (I appreciate that Christmas and New Year accounted for two of these missed appointments and severe weather the first week in January meant he couldn't get to the hospital). I have been assured these postponements will not be detrimental to his health, but I am not convinced. My husband has other health problems including suffering a stroke two years ago and gets quite anxious - his outpatient appointment to see a consultant about his haemochromatosis has been cancelled several times!! Until his iron overload problem is much less we cannot assess his level of health.
