"doctor in A&E made the situation worse"

I came with my boyfriend the A&E because of mania and suicidal intent.

We saw a doctor who said that the mental health team wouldn't be interested and that my boyfriend needs to pull himself together. He also said he was surprised I'd stayed with him and that my boyfriend should exercise control over his bipolar.

He was adamant that there is a control element in mental health. Made the situation far worse. I studied medical neuroscience and have some clinical experience so was surprised we had been allocated someone who appeared to be so badly trained in mental health and with a lack of basic understanding. He said he sees bipolar people all the time and understands - which I worry about. If someone was allocated him without support or much knowledge of the services it could end badly. Consistently have bad experiences with GPs and their lack of mental health training.

We managed to see the mental health team in the end a psych nurse and clinical psychiatrist who were very good. Would highly recommend mental health team, they were excellent and obviously had a lot of experience. I would suggest that this doctor is not allocated to mental health patients and its left to the psychiatrists and psych nurses.
