"Poor NHS staff! I applaud you"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I broke my wrist in Berwick at 12.30pm. I was taken by ambulance to Berwick Infirmary. Then sent to Cramlington with my husband therefore a walk in emergency. I saw a nurse almost immediately then had to wait in a chaired area for 3hrs to see a Dr. Nobody asked if the other patients required pain relief. Finally I saw a Dr at 7pm who told me I had to be admitted for an operation the following day. I then sat in this chaired area for 2.5hrs to be taken to a ward. I'd eaten nothing all day. When I got to my lovely private room at 9.30pm the staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.

Considering this to be a trauma unit the wait was more than traumatic for me. This was due to the staff having such a great workload. When I asked how much longer would it take to take me to the ward I was spoke to sharply. I assume this was due to work pressures.

At Berwick I was taken to a private curtained area. Xrayed straight away then had a back slab put on all in the space of an hour. I'd expect to have the same treatment at a specialised trauma unit. Obviously something has gone wrong here somewhere. However I respect all Dr's nurses consultants and Porters for the difficult job expected of them. A big thank you to all the staff.

Response from Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

Dear Mrs Flockhart

Thank you for your feedback and I’m very sorry that you experienced a longer wait than we would like. We have been dealing with large numbers of patients coming in to our emergency department, as is the case in units all across the country.

I’m pleased that you were treated at Berwick so quickly, the infirmary is able to treat the majority of minor fractures. In your case it sounds as though you were transferred after your assessment as you required surgery.

Thank you for your comments about our staff, we know how incredibly hard they work.

I hope that you are now making a good recovery after your surgery.

Kind regards

Claire Riley
