"A great experience for us both"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Plastic Surgery & Burns

(as the patient),

My dad has Parkinson's and dementia, it was thought rather than putting him through the stress of going to theatre it was suggested to carry out the procedure in a quiet room, where the surgeons and nurses came there. I was able to stay with him and help him through it. The Surgeons and specialists nurses were fantastic, it turned out to be a great experience for us both. So thank you to everyone who helped make this happen x

Dear puzzle

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your dad and your recent hospital experience. With conditions like parkinson's and dementia it is so important to prevent unecessary stress and to involve family members in the care process. It sounds like the staff did exactly that by adapting to the needs of your father. This is really person centred care at it's best. I will be delighted to share your post with the Surgical Teams and beyond; your post highlights the importance of a personal and flexible approach. Thank you so much for sharing.

Regards

Louise Ewing

Dear puzzle

I hope you don't mind me posting again. Following on from our recent correspondence, I received the following request from Mrs Helen Skinner, Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Nurse Consultant.

"As part of the continued work I am doing around involving carers of people with dementia, I am interested in speaking to relatives and carers who have had the opportunity to be involved in care when their loved one was in hospital.

I recently read a story on patient opinion of an occasion when this happened. I was wondering if it was possible for you to make contact with this carer as I would very much like to chat with them to learn more about their experience.

I can be contacted on the email and telephone number below".
