"My experience in Maternity"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I visited the maternity ward in my 2nd trimester. There I complained about intense abdominal pain.

Although there are a few helpful nurses on that ward. I couldn't help but notice the attitude of a few.

As I sat in the waiting room eating a sandwich, a nurse passed by and said-Well must be feeling better now?

This happened to be the member of staff that was attending to me.

Disheartened by the sarcastic remark I followed the them into the room to be examined.

Throughout the examination the she continued to make inappropriate sarcastic remarks.

During my vaginal examination the staff member even refused to get a smaller spectrum, although I could not bare the pain. (Thankfully another member of staff came to my aid with a smaller spectrum)

She seemed reluctant to deal with me, and continuously insinuated that I did not need any care.

After describing how my abdominal pains were when I bent down, I remember her saying.. well we all know the answer to that then. DONT BEND DOWN.

This staff member along with a few other nurses presented the same attitude.

It was very distressing. It made me feel uncomfortable. In a state where I felt scared for the health of my child and I.. The attitude did not aid my anxiety.

My hopes are that I am not placed in the care of such a nurse when I am due to give birth.

It was horrible.....

Dear B Kay

I was very troubled to read your account of your visit to our department, this is certainly not the standard of care that you should expect.

If possible, I would like you to talk through your experience with one of our Matron's, both to see if there is anything more that we can be doing to support you and also to try to ensure that we can improve the care we wish to provide to everyone.

If you would be happy to talk things through, please email miranda.johnson@sash.nhs.uk

I am very sorry for the poor experience you have had on this occasion.

Bill Kilvington

Associate Director
