"Waiting times and concerns about rude staff"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I had an appointment scheduled at the antenatal clinic in ninewells hospital recently. Unfortunately my boys had taken ill that morning so I tried to contact the clinic to rearrange another appointment. I called continuously over 4 hours only for my calls to ring out.

The following week I was sent another appointment to attend at 11. 30am which I did and a little early at that. I sat in the waiting room from 10. 55am untill 12. 40pm! I didn't expect to get seen early or even dot on time but that was ridiculous.

I was taken to a room to be weighed, blood pressure checked and abdomen meassured- all of which I could have had done at my local clinic and in under 15 mins too!

Then I was told the consultant wanted to see me. I waited another 45mins for him to burst through the door and DEMAND I had the GTT test which I had previously refused!

I appreciate staff are busy but aren't we all. There is no need for rudeness. Ninewells really need to work on waiting times and bedside manner! However, the midwife care can't be faulted.

Thank you for providing this feedback and for giving us the opportunity to respond. We would like to apologise that you did not have the care experience you hoped for. Sometimes our antenatal clinics are overbooked and this can lead to delays in women being seen. Nevertheless, this does not excuse the fact that you perceived the consultant to be rude; please accept our apologies. All tests should be offered with a clear explanation as to why they are recommended with an explanation as to how they may improve pregnancy outcomes. These tests are all options and you can accept or decline any investigation but you should do this after a discussion to ensure you understand the risks and benefits to you and your baby. We would like to offer you the opportunity to meet to discuss this care episode at a time that is convenient for you. If you would like to do so, please contact the Complaints and Feedback Team on 0800 027 5507 (freephone) or via email to feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further concerns.
