"The Imaging department seemed ..."

About: Royal Derby Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The Imaging department seemed crowded however the staff were obviously working hard and everbody seemed to be moving through the system quickly.

There are separate receptions which are clearly labelled off the main waiting area.

I arrived filled out the safety forms for the scanner to check I didn't have any metal implants and then changed into comfortable blue surgical pyjama style trousers and top in spacious changing rooms. I was offered a locker aswell to keep my personal affects safe.

I was then met by a radiographer from the changed waiting room which is separate from the main waiting room. It was a nice touch when you've changed there is a separate waiting area so you don't have to sit in the main area. I then had my scan and was offered a wide choice of music to listen to during the scan of my brain and they also checked that I knew where to get my results from when it was over.

It was a very pleasant experience and I need to pass my thanks on to all of the staff who work in the MRI scanners.

What could be improved

Nothing, everything was in order and well considered. They are obviously very good at what they do.

Anything else?

I was also very impressed by how competently the radiographer put the injection of gadolinium MRI dye into my arm so my brain would show up better. She provided an explanation at my level (I do have an A- level in Physics so know how MRI scanners work) and she asked me which arm I would prefer to have the injection in. This meant I had a real choice for my care which made a big difference to me as I prefer needles in my right arm as the vein is more tolerant to needles and less painful. Usually they just go for my left arm as I'm right handed and I often have a little bruise after giving blood but they listened to me and acted on it.
