"My experience of NHS Hairmyres - 2 wonderful nurses!"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Surgery (Ward 5)

(as the patient),

I was taken into hospital on Monday evening with suspected appendicitis. I was terrified. There were no beds in the ward so I stayed in a&e over night.

I was well looked after until the morning where I was moved to minor injuries where there was more room. By this point I had seen 3 different surgeons and told I would be kept in for further scans. I was by myself and very frightened.

Everyone had been lovely so far and I thought my expectation had been met until the handover at 8am. Nurse Jill D and nurse Jennifer were now looking after me and they did more than just that. They went above and beyond. To say they looked after me is an understatement. They made so much effort to make sure I was ok. There were times it was unclear what the surgeons plans were for me and they had no problems calling and asking. They made me feel at home which is pretty unusual when your in hospital. Since the ward was so busy I could hear how they cared for other patients too and I couldn't help but think how under appreciated they must be. They deserve an award! They broke down the awkward barriers with all patients and it was like speaking to friends.

I found some other nurses lacked their empathy and social skills and honestly think they should be training other nurses.

Those two are an absolute credit to the NHS! And deserve recognition for their efforts. I hope the NHS head of nursing appreciates the extra efforts these two nurses go to in order to reassure the patients. At times I was upset and nervous awaiting my results and they made it possible for me to be calm during such tense times. I will be sending a personal card to the ward wth some chocolates! Thanks Jill and Jen! I'll never forget the outstanding service you provided!

Dear Cheape1991,

Thank you for the wonderful feedback regarding these staff members. It can indeed be a terrifying experience coming into hospital at any time and especially if you are acutely unwell.

I am so pleased that you were well cared for in a compassionate manner which we strive for from all of our staff.

As this is a public website, can I ask you to contact me via 01355584664 so that I can gain further information about the staff and ward concerned in order to thank them personally too.

Kind Regards

Gwen
