"A&E Has some of the most pretentious staff in..."

About: Dorset County Hospital

I visited A&E on Thursday night around 11pm, and I was met by one of the rudest receptionists I have ever met, anyone would have thought she was in charge of the NHS, she clearly felt that being a receptionist was below her. A paramedic was also sat at reception who decided to give her opinion as to what was wrong with me to another receptionist saying 'it's clearly viral'. I was then told to go and wait in the waiting area from which I would probably be transferred to out of hours GP. I was then triaged by a staff nurse. who within 30 seconds told me I just had a cold, after some prompting she then took my obs and agreed with me it wasn't a cold. I did then get transferred to the out of hours doctor after about 3 hours in what can only be described as the worst ED in the country. Thankfully the doctor I saw afterwards knew the difference between a viral cold and a bacterial infection and treated t accordingly. The whole time I spent in A&E i felt as though I was wasting their time and they had better things to do, despite the fact on arrival I rated my pain as 8/10. This department clearly has a multitude of problems which undoubtedly begins and ends with it's staff! The management of this department should be ashamed at the sheer lack of patient care and empathy their team are providing. Another big issue I see with this department is it's waiting times. On arrival the electronic board was saying the waiting time was 3 hours. 3 hours is absolutely appalling considering the small amount of patients in the department at the time. I have visited other departments in the country for myself and others, A&Es that where much bigger and had lower staffing levels that could still treat patients in a more time efficient manner with much more empathy. I only wish I could work with this department and assist them their continued development as if it continues the way it does, it's problems are only going to continue to get worse. It is front line service providers like this that give the NHS a bad reputation
