"My son was admitted via A&E to the Paediatric..."

What I liked

My son was admitted via A&E to the Paediatric ward. As a baby, he was given a private room which was very well equipped, and in good repair (as I'd expect for a new hospital).

What could be improved

For a start, the level of care needs to be monitored. After being prescribed meds, my son should have received 3 blood pressure and 1 urine test per day. On day 1, with meds starting at 7am, he finally got a BP test at 6pm and no urine test. We're now on day 2, and I've had to nag for the first BP test at 11am (he's been awake since 7am). I am currently refusing to take him home until he's had 24hrs consistent monitoring for adverse reactions to the drugs.

Secondly, this ward is exclusive for young paediatric patients - babies/toddlers. Yet there are NO high chairs or bouncers - nowhere to sit a young baby whilst attempting to feed them solids. In order that my baby continues weaning (I don't want his hospital admission to affect this developmental stage in his life), I have had to take in his own bumbo chair to sit in while feeding.

Having stayed with my son 24/7 for 5 days, I have had to leave him this afternoon to sort out things at home. I have left detailed instructions about his routine (nappy, feeding, meds, sleep) but given the poor lack of interaction from ward staff so far in his stay, I am really worried that he won't be getting this minimal level of care, let alone any stimulation / play / interaction.

If your child is due to go into RCH for a stay, as a parent be prepared to stay with them 24/7 - it's the only way that you can ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve.
