"My father's third visit (see ..."

About: Bedford Hospital South Wing

(as the patient),

What I liked

My father's third visit (see comments below from Dec 2009) followed a broadly similar pattern.....turn up for a 1430 appointment and sit around for 80 minutes. How can that be right?

What could be improved

This time, my son came with me and, as many youngsters, was not prepared to sit meekly by just waiting till the system ground on and on and we reached the top. So he went and asked at the desk. As he did so, the nurse came out of the doctor's room and sad the previous patient (who had been in for 45 mins) would be another 45 mins. That spurred the staff into action as we said, "surely not a wait of over two hours"?

Anything else?

So a junior nurse was desperately dispatched to take my father off to be weighed. "Hello darling", they said, "and how are you today"? As my son commented, "It's his body that's not right. His brain is fine". Dreadful.

Anyway, my father was shifted from the doctor he was supposed to see to the next vacant space with another.

Let's try again - if an appointment is 1430 then why can the patient not be seen at the booked time? Simple question and it should be a simple answer. I look forward to it.

We work very hard to ensure our clinics run on time, but there are occasions when delays occur, particularly when consultants are called away to deal with emergencies. Staff should explain to patients why their appointment may be or has been delayed at the time. Without knowing which clinic your father attended and on which dates, it is not possible for us to provide an answer as to why his appointments were delayed. As previously advised, we would ask you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01234 795814 or pals@bedfordhospital.nhs.uk and provide us with more information so that we can look into the issues you have raised.
