"Simply Not Good Enough!"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

My entire experience of attending CI is one of disappointment and concern. Clearly some staff still care (they're usually on the posters) but I found them totally de-motivated and not particularly caring either. The shortage of Consultants and nurses brings with it an often condescending 'take it or leave it' attitude - you just get the impression some are just hanging on until their pensions kick -in. Clearly, there are good staff at the CI and I'm sure e.g. A & E will score well but the overall impression of this over-rated aircraft hanger is not fit for purpose. I also witnessed some very poor basic hygiene standards which I reported (This wasn't in Urology).

I'd also like to know why it takes 6 weeks for a referral letter for an operation to be typed up ('We've only one typist now").

Really poor - Cumbrians deserve better!

Response from Cumberland Infirmary

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of your concerns about staffing levels and cleanliness after your recent visit to the Cumberland Infirmary.

Our staff work very hard to care for their patients and it is of great concern to learn that some members of staff have given you the impression that they are unhappy at work.

I shall pass your comments to Matron and ask her to make the staff aware that their attitude and demeanour really do affect how patients feel when they are in hospital either as in-patients or out-patients.

Clearly your experiences have made you feel less than satisfied and please accept my sincere apologies.

Your comments are important to us and by hearing about patients’ experiences we are helped to improve our service.

Best regards,

Alison
