"painful experience"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Neurology

My Gp referred me to neurology because of acute pain loss of sensation in my neck and arm .

I had to call 6 weeks later as I had not heard anything about an appointment and the pain is now chronic.

I was given a cancelled appointment on the 7th of January .

In clinic my experience was of being shuffled from the waiting room to sit on a chair in the corridor .A nurse ? attempting to take my blood pressure and asking is it normally high ,no explanation.

When I got to see the professor they asked me why I had been referred to them regardless that they had the notes from my Gp and an MRI scan which they did show me and explained the issue "A pinched nerve "

They told me they were going to refer me on to the orthopaedic surgeons and that I would hear something in the next 2 weeks which is now 3 weeks from that consultation and still no appointment and in a lot of pain.

I am a nurse of 42 years standing and never throughout my time as a nurse on the wards and departments have I ever been witness to peoples pain being disregarded in such a manner .No one likes being ill or in pain and everyone has a right to care dignity and respect .All I want is to get some semblance of normality back and to be pain free is this too much to expect

I am really sorry to hear about your poor experience, Clearly this is not what we would want for our patients.

I am concerned that you have not heard anything about your referral to the orthopaedic surgeons and I would urge you to contact our Patient Services Team to formally raise your concerns and provide your personal details so that we can assist.

The team can be contacted on telephone number 0114 271 2400 or by emailing pst@sth.nhs.uk

Kind regards
