"Avoid this A&E"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

I have been to this a&e many times over the years n never really feel I have a answer to my problem when I leave, but when my 7 month old son woke up with a strange movement to his eye I took him straight to a&e to be treated like I was crazy and got palmed off to see a doctor In the walk in centre once again their attitude towards me was like I was being stupid was told go home and that my son may have a squint which they could see no sign of themselves that was the best answer they could give me go Home see how it goes I was told Not happy with that I took my son to the rvi they were fantastic straight away he was treated it's now two weeks later I have found out my son has a rare brain tumor behind his eye and is currently undergoing his first cycle of chemotherapy I can't imagine what the outcome could of been if I had of just took that it was a squint and gone home.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on NHS Choices regarding your recent experience of our Paediatric A&E Services.

I am sorry the service you received was not of our usual high standard and we were unable to provide a specific diagnosis for your son.

I would be happy to have your concerns formally investigated if you could either email me the details at steve.williamson@stft.nhs.uk, or write to me at South Tyneside District Hospital, Harton Lane, South Shields, NE34 0PL.

In the interim, I will share your comments with the teams concerned in order that they can reflect on your experience.

I do hope your son is able to make a full recovery.

Kind regards

Steve Williamson

Chief Executive
