"surgical day ward"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

i have had several trips to this hosital since june with illness and a suspected hernia but had emergency femerol hernia repair on ward 15 (January2016) was told I would be given a bed but when arrived was no beds so was left sitting in a wheelchair in pain from 7.30am til 11.30am. i was given painkillers and the usual obs of blood pressure etc I was taken in a private room but then returned to a waiting room... The operation went well I was off the ward 12 til 4pm. the drs nurses and theatre staff were fantastic and as my observations were fine i was allowed home 8.30pm although I hadn't been to the toilet.

I was advised not to drive for 1 to 2 days a nurse wrote it in a booklet and was told I can return to work the following week. I contacted my gp who did a home visit and said no driving g for a month or work.

A bit worrying advice completely different to nurses advice. my groin cut was glued so no dressing on wound which did suprize me . I am recovering at home

Dear Amanda

There appears to be a delay in us receiving comments made on NHS Choices. Please be assured I’ve responded as soon as I am able to, I’m sorry if it appears otherwise.

It sounds like you were patient on our Surgical Assessment Unit which has seen unprecedented demand. This is an unusual situation which has meant it is a busier environment than normal. This has led to some patients having to be in a waiting area until they are prepared for theatres in a bedded area. We would prefer to have patients in a bedded area from the moment they arrive on the unit but at times we are unable to do this, and I am sorry that this was the situation in your case.

Without knowing the exact details of your treatment it is difficult to comment on the subsequent advice you were given by your GP.

However it is important you know which advice to follow. As I don’t have your contact details to get in touch with you directly please can I ask that you call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0800 032 0202 who will work with your consultant to verify your recovery period.

Best wishes

Claire Riley
