"meltdown in Majors department"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital

25th Jan 2016 attended A &E with chest pains, on arrival no receptionist for 20 mins!! got to Majors another half hour wait, very nice nurse done ecg and bloods. Then waited to see doctor. Doctor spoke to me then said will call u when result of bloods arrive which will take about an hour. 4 hours later doctor came to waiting area tried to get more blood as no room available hardly sterile condtions!! Told me will take 20 mins 2 hours later doc told me machine broke have to get blood from other arm. What I noticed from being there 8 hours, patients are just left waiting for results, in the meantime more and more patients arriving! There was a young girl laying on the floor, 5 people sitting on the floor including myself. Most people I spoke to were waiting for results for hours. That needs to change b4 something very serious happens. If results are given then that patient can leave if all is well to make room for patients arriving!!

We are really sorry to read of your experience. Our staff work hard to provide patients with the care they need at the right time and in as short a time as possible. Unfortunately sometimes the department can be very busy which means patients may have to wait longer than anticipated. Patients are triaged and seen according to their needs which may mean if a more urgent case comes in that has to be made our priority at that time. Looking back at 25 January, this was an exceptionally busy day for A&Es across the whole of the country not just at Whipps Cross.

Thank you for raising your concerns with us. We value your feedback and have shared this with the team in the Emergency Department.

Kind regards

Barts Health NHS Trust
