"Brilliant Post Stroke Care"

About: Heartlands Hospital

I suffered a stroke on March15 2015 at 2.00pm,. I was so fortunate my wife rushed me straight to Good Hope A&E Ambulance entrance. I was carried from my car and given initial test and Cannula inserted. Then transferred to Heartlands via Emergency Ambulance.

Greeted by Acute Stroke Team and treatment commenced upon arrival, scans done and transferred to specialist ward. Cared for by two nurses two patients.

Monitoring medication and recovery. Seen by Consultant later in afternoon and again next morning prior to MRI and Carotid Artery scans. Discharged later that afternoon (24hours after the event. Subsequently have worked daily at mental maths, crosswords, wordseaches, sudukho and physical sequences such as making a clockface by placing my feet at 12, 1, 2, 3, etc. Full recovery thanks to wife's determination and our hard work. Medication working superbly and GP reassurances to go and live a normal life. Now planing walking football, going for long walks, and writing a children's book..

Dear Andy Brown

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent patient experience in our trust.

I am so pleased to read that you received prompt assessment and treatment, initially at Good Hope Hospital, and on being transferred to Heartlands Hospital to our Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU).

The Stroke Service in our trust is rated as level A by the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP), one of only two Trusts in the region that hold an A rating.

Our stroke service works extremely hard to ensure prompt treatment to minimise long term damage caused by stroke and since the reconfiguration of our stroke services has occurred, there has been significant improvements for our patients, leading to better outcomes for seriously ill patients and means that more people are going home without any disability after a stroke.

I will ensure that your comments are forwarded to Dr Niall Fergusson, Clinical Director for Stroke and Elderly Care Services and to Helen Seymour, Matron for Stroke and Elderly Care who will both be thrilled to read your feedback, and ensure that it is communicated to all of the medical and nursing team in the Stroke Service. Feedback such as yours gives a great boost to our staff who work extremely hard in often difficult circumstances.

I do hope my actions are acceptable and once again thank you so much for taking the time to provide your comments, patient experience is extremely important to us.

I wish you well in your continued recovery.

Kind regards

Marie Helebert
