What I liked
I was due for a colonoscopy (at the Riverside Building - 30/12/09) and was concerned about a number of issues including embarrassment and gender of doctor (I am male) as well as not wanting sedation. I am a total coward with needles, pain and doctors.
Well before my appointment I was provided with full information about the procedure and required preparation - which answered all of my questions.
From the moment I arrived I was treated with courtesy, respect and dignity and forgot all about my worries. Everything went fine, my views were respected and I could not criticize any aspect of my care. I felt comfortable, relaxed and safe at all times.
At all times the doctor explained what was happening and a nurse ensured my comfort.
The professionalism of my doctor and nurses made an unpleasant procedure a breeze. I would now have no concerns for any other procedure I may need at Lewisham and would choose it as my first choice.
What could be improved
I think that, given the constraints on finances and staff, there is nothing that could have been done to make my experience better (other than, perhaps, abandoning the awful blue shorts I had to wear - which I understand is to provide extra privacy; but maybe a choice to wear or not could be given).
Anything else?
I would like to thank the staff (doctor & nurses) who carried out my procedure for their care, and also the personal touches that made the experience interesting and informative as well as, while not enjoyable, something that I would have no fear of having to undergo again.
