I have had Prostate Cancer radiotherapy treatment in 2015 at Southend Hospital and have been extremely well looked after by all staff within Oncology and Urology departments. In January 2016 I picked up a bad infection and was experiencing pain and great difficulty urinating and whilst awaiting gp test results was feeling very unwell and very uncomfortable. I telephoned Urology for advice and one of the nurses phoned me back and arranged for me to come in straight away. The nurse scanned me and catheterised me to relieve my pain. I was prescribed antibiotics as required by my test results. My case was referred to a doctor who agreed the nurse could teach me self catheterisation so in future I can get myself out of discomfort should an infection arise. The nurse was extremely efficient and kind and turned me from an apprehensive, in extreme discomfort patient to someone who knew he was getting the correct treatment and could relieve his own discomfort without a frantic dash to A&E. Thank you to the amazing Urology Nurses, the reception team for getting my message through and of course the doctors agreeing the best way forward for me. Every question and concern I had was professionally answered and explained and I cannot over emphasise enough when you are in pain and confused about what has happened to your body how reassuring it is to know there is such a professional caring team in Urology looking after you. Thank you for rescuing the situation for me and getting me back on track.
