I just had a bad experience to the Minor Injury at Wycombe Hospital.
I ‘ve been there with my living partner who was the patient. As he had difficult to understand english and to speak, especially regarding medical terminology, when we had been visited in the past I always come with him inside and sometimes translate what the doctor said or translate what he want to says to the doctor. All the people that we had been in touch are always ok with that and they perferctly understand the situation.
Tonight we had been there, we’ve been seen by this doctor. First they seem a little disturbed of my presence inside to the room, we explain soon that I’m his living partner and he had difficult to talk, I told them and he told her aswell, but they compliant and they said that he has to talk because he is the patient and I don't. Ok that’s partly reasonable, but my boyfriend should have to explain 7 days of health problem and actually he had difficult to explain and due to the language difficult he didn’t mention some relevant thing.
Then the Dr start talking and 3/4 times he ask me to translate what did the Dr said or when they asked him something he asked me to answer as he don’t know how to answer in english.
This very rude doctor said: you have to talk in english here, it’s not acceptable that you talk in another language.
I was shocked and disappointed, so I told them: Sorry but he doesn’t understand what do you say or how to answer so he ask me to translate, if I talk to him in english still could be a problem, also he has difficult to understand medical terminology.
The Dr reply ask for how long he lives here, then said the because he’s been here for a year he should be talk in english already.
Also they didn't listen us carefully or with attention.
I’m a nurse and I never had problem if a patient don’t understand what I say and the family translate for him. I think this is unacceptable. I didn’t have this problem before and we had different occasion with gp or dentist or medical staff.
We are very upset about it.
