"Admissions one"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I went to see my GP on Monday 18th January 2016 and she decided I needed to be checked out at hospital.

On arriving at The Victoria hospital Kirkcaldy I was taken into a waiting room with some comfortable chairs and it was explained there would be a wait. I had my blood pressure etc taken. I then had a long wait but I could see some of the patients who were coming in on stretchers were very ill so I did not mind waiting ( can't say the same for my husband! )

Eventually I had some blood taken and was taken into a room to be seen by a young Dr who introduced herself as Claire, she examined me and explained that I would need a further blood test and a chest X-ray.

Meantime I had been offered something to eat and numerous cups of tea.

Eventually I was told about 7 hours after arriving that I could go home.

I would like to commend all the staff each of whom treated me with courtesy and respect even although the unit was like a war zone with patients coming in from all directions. I am 67 and remember the days when Consultants and some nurses barely looked at you never mind introducing themselves by their first names, shaking your hand and explaining everything very clearly. Changed days indeed!

Staff of Admissions one you are all stars-thank you.

Dear Granny

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience. I am sorry you had such a wait; however I was delighted to hear about the way staff dealt with you. Clearly keeping you informed and making sure you were comfortable was very important. The staff in the Admissions Unit do work under alot of pressure at times so it is good to hear that they have not lost sight of the little things that mke a big difference. I will make sure your post is widely shared so that we can all learn from this. It's a great reminder to us all of just how importnat it is to remember the basics.

Kind Regards

Louise Ewing

Update posted by Granny (the patient)

I have had negative experiences in hospital and complained but feel it is important to let staff know when things are done right.

I had absolutely no problem about the time I waited,I realise staff have to prioritise patients as they arrive. Clearly a lot of patients being admitted were very ill and it is only right that urgent cases are dealt with as soon as possible.

NHS Fife you are going in the right direction and we are very lucky to have you.
