"My cancer treatment"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / General surgery Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

In December 2015 I was referred to RBH by my GP with suspected rectal cancer.

I was seen very quickly within two weeks by one of the surgeons who fast tracked a colonoscopy, CT scan and MRI scan. I was assigned a contact specialist nurse (Sara) who kept me informed of all decisions as they were made. Within two weeks I was diagnosed correctly and admitted to Ward 16 for an operation to remove the cancer. The operation was performed by Mr Fozzad. I cannot praise him and his staff too highly for what they did for me. Ward 16 was excellent - all their staff were tremendous. I also needed a prostate operation as soon as my chemotherapy ended. This again was an excellent process and I received top rate care from Ward 15 and Mr Madders.

The first operation needed me to have a stoma bag for about 9 months and the assistance I received from the stoma nurses was great - nothing was too much trouble for them.

Finally in October I had my stoma reversed by Mr Mallick - everything went like clockwork and once again, Ward 16 were superb. I am now almost back to normal again.

I have to say that the treatment I received from Bournemouth Hospital has been top rate from beginning to end. I am very grateful to all the staff for their care.

Dear John4256

Thank you for your recognition of the treatment that you received with us, and we are all delighted that you have made such excellent progress in your recovery and hope that continues.

Receiving your kind words and feedback will be such a boost for all the staff on both of the wards and all staff involved in your care and I will be privileged to pass it on, to them including the stoma team and the Consultants. Many patients have a temporary stoma bag, which can be a difficult transition, so I am pleased you received the support you needed during that time and that it was reversed for you so that you could get back to normal.

Thank you again and I hope that your positive experience will give confidence to others facing a similar journey and also to their carer’s.
