"Problems after minor day surgery"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I attended for minor gynaecological day surgery in October 2015. I walked into the hospital with no trouble weight bearing or moving and with no pain. Following surgery I have had agonising pain from my pelvis and the surrounding area, to the extent of not being able to weight bear.

I have asked the consultant to refer me for MRI but have been told I must wait the minimum of 12 weeks for an orthopaedic outpatient appointment and then I might be added to the waiting list for MRI. Radiology recommended the MRI when they vetoed a pelvic xray.

Dear Veryannoyed13

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience. I was sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing; this must be a very difficult situation for you.

I am not sure if I can help in terms of the waiting time for a scan as I know it is normal practice to prioritise scans following assessment of the clinincal condition; however it may be possible for you to get a cancellation and I would certainly be happy to look into the possibilities for you if that would be helpful.

In terms of your concerns about the surgery being responsible for your current situation, again this is something that we could look into in more detail if you were able to provide me with your specific details.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like me to help further.

Regards

Louise Ewing

Dear Louise,

Many thanks for your response. Your department received my complaint in early December 2015, you are therefore already in receipt of my details.

It wouldn't be possible for you to offer me a cancellation for MRI at present as despite my GP and radiology's recommendations I have not been referred for one. Your department advised me that the Gynaecology Consultant's preference was for me to wait at least 3 months for an orthopaedic assessment for referral for MRI.

It is over 12 weeks since I had surgery and I expected better support and not having to be referred to orthopaedics (with a minimum 12 week wait from now- letter received this week) for investigation when I was already effectively 'in the system' with gynaecology and the injury resulted immediately after the surgery. I left the day unit in a wheelchair.

I'm disgusted that no-one is any rush to discover what was done to me and to prevent the same being done to anyone else. Through OHSAS I am now seeing a physio - who confirms my pelvis has been pulled out of alignment and my lower back has also sustained injury.

I am making slow progress in healing, but I very much believe that NHS Fife is happy to take as long as possible in the hope that by the time I am assessed at orthopaedics or have an MRI (4-6 months from now in my estimate) that I will have healed with the help of physiotherapy and my own determination to get back on feet. This being the case they will not need to take responsibility for the injury and months of pain and disability has caused.

Yours sincerely

Thank you for confirming that you have already been in contact with my Department. I am sorry that I misunderstood the situation with regards to the MRI scan; I have established that this has now been requested.

I have asked my colleague, Jane Farquhar to contact you directly to discuss the best way to take things forward from here.

Regards
