"Spire Liverpool - Staff too busy"

About: Spire Liverpool Hospital

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Spire for a cholecystectomy as an NHS patient. The referral process was really quick which was great.

Unfortunately, there were some complications which meant I would need to stay in. This information wasn't clearly communicated to me for a good few hours & I was unable to update my partner who was waiting to hear if he needed to leave work to pick me up. When I was informed I would be staying, I asked one of the nurses if they could help me go to the toilet & she said she would fetch somebody. An hour later, I was still waiting so pressed the call bell for help. Nobody came so I pressed it another few times. Again, nobody arrived.

Luckily by this point, my partner had come in (off his own back) to see how I was doing. I was in tears of pain by then as I was so desperate for the toilet so he had to help me out of bed & assist me to the toilet. I was feeling quite sick & dizzy at this point so my partner had to go & find a nurse. He was gone for at least 15 minutes trying to find somebody.

Unfortunately, because I had been waiting for so long to go to the toilet (probably around 4hrs at this point), I was finding it hard to physically produce anything although the feeling was still there. The nurse was very reassuring & told me not to worry & she would wait as long as needed. Eventually I gave up & went back to bed (with the help of the nurse). This carried on for the rest of the evening & my partner then left after being informed I was going to be kept in overnight.

The next day I was not updated on whether I was going to be discharged that day & had to wait for what seemed like ages for somebody to come in & speak to me (I had to ask the staff taking my lunch order if they could get somebody for me) & again, nobody came for around 30 minutes.

I left the hospital feeling quite let down as I was expecting the care might be a little more joined up or more efficient being in a private setting but sadly it wasn't. The nursing staff were absolutely lovely though when they did help.
